5 Ways To Style The Shorts You’ll Actually Want To Wear In A Heat Wave
When it’s too hot to overthink your outfit, start with one easy base: cotton shorts.
There is a point in the summer where getting dressed stops being about making a whole “look” and becomes more about asking: What can I wear that will not make me immediately regret leaving the house?
That is where breathable fabrics come in. Cotton, linen, silk, and soft natural-fibre blends are some of my favourite pieces to reach for when the weather is hot, sticky, or just generally doing too much.
For this try-on, I styled the same pair of blue cotton shorts five different ways with lightweight summer tops. The goal was simple: easy outfits that still feel pulled together, without needing a brand-new wardrobe.
The Summer Outfit Formula
Cotton shorts + breathable top + comfortable shoes = an outfit you can actually live your life in.

1. Blue on Blue
A soft blue top with blue cotton shorts creates an easy monochrome summer look. It feels calm, simple, and effortless without being boring. This is the kind of outfit that works for errands, casual lunch, cottage mornings, or slow days when you still want to feel put together.
Style tip: when wearing similar colours together, texture makes the outfit feel more intentional. Think cotton, linen, subtle wrinkles, and soft movement.

2. Crisp White Linen
A white summer top with blue shorts is a classic for a reason. It feels fresh, clean, and easy. The cropped shape also balances nicely with a higher-waisted short, especially when you want an outfit that looks styled but still feels relaxed.
This is a great example of how simple pieces can do a lot. You do not need a complicated outfit when the fabric, fit, and proportions are working.

3. A Soft Print
If you like a little more personality, a lightweight printed top is an easy way to make cotton shorts feel more styled. The blue tones in the print tie back to the shorts, while the pattern adds movement and interest.
This is one of my favourite ways to make summer basics feel less basic: keep the outfit comfortable, but let one piece have a little fun.

4. The Open Button-Up
An open button-up over a simple tank is such an underrated summer styling trick. It gives you a little coverage without feeling heavy, and it makes the outfit feel layered without adding warmth in the same way a jacket would.
This is a great formula for travel, patios, beach towns, park days, or anywhere you want to feel casual but not unfinished.
Try this:
Leave the button-up open, half-tuck one side, or tie it at the waist depending on how relaxed or polished you want the outfit to feel.

5. The Easy Linen Tee
A soft neutral tee with a subtle detail is the kind of summer top that quietly does the most. It is easy to throw on, breathable, and still feels more interesting than a plain basic.
This outfit is perfect for the days when you want to get dressed in two minutes but still feel like yourself.
Why Breathable Fabrics Matter
Choosing breathable fabrics can make a huge difference in how comfortable you feel during the summer. Natural fibres like cotton and linen are often easier to wear in the heat because they feel lighter on the body and allow for more airflow.
They also tend to be pieces you reach for again and again, which is exactly the point of a more sustainable wardrobe: finding clothes that feel good enough to actually wear.
A sustainable wardrobe does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with one really wearable pair of shorts.
How to Build More Outfits With Less
One of the easiest ways to get more out of your wardrobe is to choose pieces that mix and match well. A simple pair of cotton shorts can feel completely different depending on what you wear with them.
Try pairing them with:
- a matching colour for a soft monochrome look
- a crisp white top for an easy classic outfit
- a printed blouse for personality
- an open button-up for light layering
- a neutral tee for everyday comfort
This is the magic of good basics. They give you options without making your closet feel overwhelming.
